WHY THE @&*# IS MICROSOFT DOING THIS?
Microsoft contributing to Open Source projects? Organizing Make Web Not War and MonDev? Is it an evil ploy to take over the world, or has “the empire” gone soft?
Some say it’s for the love of technology, web developers and designers. Some say we’re desperate, and being forced to “deal” with Open Source. Others, like the many open source communities we work with worldwide and in Canada: PHP Quebec, Impress CMS, TikiWiki, Vanilla Forums, Status.net, PHUG and many others, say it’s good for their projects, as it exposes those PHP apps to more people, particularly those who run Windows “shops”.
We couldn’t agree more. But it also just makes good business sense! See why on PORT25.ca — the voice of a small, but feisty Open Source strategy team at Microsoft Canada.
Oh, and if you are at Make Web Not War event – we want to talk to you! Open is also about being open to feedback and commentary from the community, and we welcome all feedback we get.
We’re the people probably wearing one of the RED shirts like this…
… or the people in the corner getting kicked (let’s hope not)…
… and if you are not at the event, please send us a tweet @PHPonWindows or feel free to rant, I mean, comment below!

Community Partner Spotlight: StatusNet
Our final community partner spotlight before the event is with StatusNet. StatusNet is the Open Source microblogging server. It lets people create Twitter-like sites on their own server and share text and files with an opt-in group of users. The software supports the Twitter API and more than 300 3rd-party apps. It also includes an event-based server-side plugin API for customizing the software, integrating other services, and modifying the business rules. Evan Prodromou is the founder and CEO of StatusNet Inc. He’s been working with the Web and Free and Open Source Software projects for 15 years.
Why did you want to get involved with Make Web Not War/FTW!?
We want to reach out to people who may not have heard of our project or may be confused or put off by the platform. We think engaging with companies and teams used to Microsoft platforms extends the reach of our project.
What do you hope this event will help achieve?
I hope that the event will raise awareness of what we’re doing and expand our coverage of the Windows platform.
What are you most looking forward to at the event? (session/speaker/party?)
I’m looking forward to hearing more about OData (« The Big O ») and what people are doing to share that data on the social Web.
